Bantu traditions that are in the bible

I have to say it myself. Bantus are stubborn. Stubborn in both good and bad ways. If you want to know the stiff-necked people as described in the bible - it is Bantus. It is this stubbornness that woke me up. If there were no people holding too tight to traditions and customs - I would have no reference for real. I grew up in a full-christian house - meaning the bantu traditions were not practiced, spoken of or even appreciated. So without practice at home it means I do not know much first hand. However, I have observed over and over neighbors doing traditional ceremonies.

I will just list things that are common bantu traditions. Some of these traditions are found in other African cultures too. What set Bantus apart is not only the common practices but the ones that are unique in a sense. I will not list the unique ones yet.

The ones that are still prevalent even in christian families are as follows:

  • Bride price – mahadi/lobola
  • Levirate marriages – ukungenwa
  • Circurmcision – ulwaluko/ukusoka/lebollo
  • Concubines – umakotshana
  • Polygamy – isithembu
  • Sabbath keepers – amasabatha (not Shembe followers)
  • Believing in One existing God called Modimo/Thixo/Somandla/uMdali/Ramasedi (well there are many names but they all say he is One)
  • and the list goes on
I will not be able to unpack and compare these traditions in one post. Instead I will rather focus on one topic per post and then show the similarities or contrasts thereof.

I hope I will be able to show enough evidence as I go on with explanation of how Bantu traditions are the same to the one in the bible.

Do you know any traditions that are in the bible that I did not list?

If you are not convinced and feel it was borrowed traditions from other nations I would also like to hear your side of the story and why you believe so.
